street_symphony: (Bruno Mars - better if you don't)

2011 brought us songs of pain, empowerment, hope, love, and that one about not doing anything at all.  This is a very pop heavy list, as you can see.  I actually liked a lot of pop this year.  Keep in mind this list is incredibly biased, filled with hits, favorites, guilty pleasures, and songs I felt deserved some love and recognition.  However, I did have a couple of rules when making this list: 1) It had to be a single (Which leaves a lot of good songs out, but if I started covering songs that were on the albums only, I would have a massive list…that or the half the list would be made up of Soul Punk—I just really like this record).  2) The single had to be released in 2011.

I checked around for songs that I liked (because it’s just a silly list I came up with after all) and the songs that the music community believed were some of the best of 2011.  In total, I came up with 35 songs.  There really is no true method here.  I just like all of the songs here.  Many are mainstream, and some are gems that some people may not be familiar with.  This is not a list of the best songs of the year, just songs we found ourselves playing nonstop.  The real challenge turned out to be trying to order the songs.  Yes, I included a joke song this year.  No, it isn’t as bad as “Pants on the Ground” last year.

Instead of building the 2011 mixtape using Playlist.com this year, I’ve chosen to use Spotify since this is more stable (Playlist.com tracks have a habit of disappearing on you).  For those of you who don’t have Spotify or don’t want it, good news!  I’ve also created a visual playlist on Youtube, so you have two options.  As usual, please don’t tell me I’ve left something out.  I can’t please everyone, but you’re more than welcome to comment with which songs you loved this year.

If a song doesn’t work on either Spotify or Youtube, please let me know.

As a work in progress for the entire year, the [livejournal.com profile] 2011scrapbook is my space to post anything and everything to document my year online.
